I do believe we can find the balance for that abandonment without chasing the high. I've been involved in running a service (yes, Anglican) where it's okay for men to play air guitar and everyone, no matter the age, to dance as David danced. The concept is that while we were once young, it is still in us, and its okay to express ourselves without judgement. This is pure joy in God's presence, not seeking a high.

Nice to see an evangelical Anglican in Melbourne. [Are you the other one? ... only joking]

Hey Jono -

Probably one of the only times I have left a comment and I'm writing my thoughts off the cuff so hopefully what I add is of worth...

I am all for engaging in worship with emotion and encouraging young people / all people to do the same.
I absolutely desire the youth and young adults I lead to engage and even abandon themselves to God with all their heart, body and soul. I think emotions are essential in engaging with God fully. If we were to cut out our emotions it would be like cutting off an arm or a leg. Same can be said if we were to decide to remove our minds from engaging in worship.

It's one of those things that is an 'this AND that' kind of situation rather then a 'this OR that' one if you're picking up what I'm putting down?!

We all know the greatest commandment "love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" - however it has to be in response to what the Holy Spirit is up to.

As a pentecostal I have been in many meetings where hyper-emotional activity has been credited to the Holy Spirit and I am not into that at all. I am of the opinion that emotion for emotion sake is more about our ego and insecurity rather than an act of worship and you can definitely tell when a time of Christ centred worship shifts from being spririt filled, spirit led to emotionally fueled ego or self driven hype... it's ugly and chaotic, all order gets thrown out the window.

I thank God that I lead a group of young people who feel free to abandon themselves in times of corporate worship, but I understand that my charge / responsibility is to teach them to engage their minds in worship and not just their emotions.

I finish off with this little quote from the Hirsch's latest book, Untamed - "To be mature disciples, we need to engage God on all three levels: our minds, our hearts, and our actions. And because we are all wired differently we will tend to prefer one over the other, which is why real knowledge of God is reached in the context of the community of faith where people can learn from one another...we do not arrive at truth alone."

Thanks for teaching me friends.
